The person behind you is NOT Miss Grimble from third grade. You are NOT reading a comic book behind the history text. So relax. Deep, cleansing breaths. There, do you feel better now?
Based on something a former coworker reported having at his previous place of employment, I printed up 4.25 x 5.5 cards and made them available to everyone in the company. One side is solid green, with the message (dropped out in white), "Feel free to knock." The other side is solid red, with the message, "Not right now, please."
Just having the option of saying No in this manner makes that back-of-the-neck feeling much more manageable--at least for me. Maybe it will help you as well.
