<<If you were going to teach a writing course to your Subject Matter
Experts,
what would you stress?>>

Tom,

I've done this several times and have found the most successful approach is
to first teach them how to recognize the problems and then teach them how to
correct them. For example, explain what a roundabout prepositional phrase is
and provide a list of roundabout prepositional phrases and a list of
straightforward alternatives.

Longwinded Straightforward

as of this date today
prior to before
subsequent to after

A book that has been absolutely invaluable to me is *Writing With Precision*
by Jefferson Bates. It includes a bunch of written exercises that can be
used in a classroom setting. It was out of print for awhile, but a new
edition is available. You can get it from Amazon.com.

Thanks,

Margaret
