The types of documents you need to produce will depend on the work of the
company you're serving. Will you venture into the financial areas, or
medical, or software, or manufacturing, or regulatory, or..? Are there
legal documentation requirements that must be satisfied?
My advice would be to join a company (or take a contract) and observe their
documentation practices and needs. Look for areas of improvement, but
respect their established methods. Wherever you go, you will need to learn
what documents they are using, but beyond that you may be able to propose
new tools and methods. Depending on whom you are working for, your
reception may vary from "why is this guy trying to change everything" to
"come on, you're the so-called expert, that's what we're paying you for."
