Perhaps the reason the Richter show chose a tech writer is the invisibility of the profession and its products in the general public view.

If the character had been a programmer, the next question would be what programs are produced? If it had been a bookeeper, some dramatic content might hinge on the handling of funds. If a boss, then how are the office relations?

But a technical writer? If the public thinks that anybody can write, then what is the value added by a "tech" writer? What's the difference between that and a "tech" valet parking attendant?

Or, what greater contrast than that between a guy who rules the universe, and a guy who sits in a drab cubicle doing "nothing" all day?
