Your intuitions are right on. For example, you might have to document how to use a hair dryer. You would want to document this as a procedure. Within that procedure you might want to have a principle (Never use hair dryers in the shower. It could result in DEATH.) Perhaps in the lead in, you want to indicate that the hair dryer requires 110V AC. This would be a fact. The principle as I understand it is that information types lend themselves to different presentations. Don't embed a procedure in a paragraph, because it is hard to follow. Procedures are best expressed as numbered lists. And so on. I'm sure more knowledgeable folks on the list will have more to say on the subject.
