RE: Companies using DOS or Windows 3.1

My dad started a data processing business in 1970, running it on IBM
mainframes. The operation is running on XT machines today. As in 8Mhz, 640K,
monochrome PC/XTs. Off in one corner of the office is a machine that
imprints plastic cards, driven by an XT running a control program I wrote in
Turbo Basic in 1987.

Systems like point of sale terminals, diagnostic equipment, scientific
instruments, and the like don't necessarily need GUIs and mass storage, so
the latest generation hardware would be overkill. Also, there are a ton of
embedded systems that use legacy processors; believe it or not, AMD still
makes 75MHz Pentiums for just that reason.

Still, it is really weird when you find office workers still using DOS or
Windows 3.11.
