I think Mike is merely preaching the "I need more time Captain!" technique
that Scotty used on Star Trek: Don't tell them how long it will really
take. Tell them it will take twice as long, then finish "early" and you
look like a superstar.
In OUR world, maybe don't stretch your estimate quite as far as Scotty
did. And I wouldn't try the heavy Scottish brogue either, unless you're
paticularly good with accents, like Mike Meyers.
Setting realistic, attainable expectations can go a long way for you, in
your current project, and in future ones. By shooting for the stars and
agreeing to ANY conditions, you can make a doormat out of yourself, and
could even miss a deadline if any unforseen challenges arise. (I know -
that NEVER happens in tech writing, right?) :)
