TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
We're in the process of finalizing a scholarship at Stanford and I
realized that what we're doing is something others on this board might
like to do at the venue of their choice. We've set up a $1000 annual
scholarship to underwrite a student doing a summer internship in some
facet of technical journalism - writing about technical issues for a
newspaper, radio or TV station, or internet publication, or working as
an aide to a columnist who specializes in technical subjects, or working
in marcom or engineering as a technical writer. We directed the
scholarship at staff members of the Stanford Daily because, at Stanford,
it offers one of the best places to learn clear and accurate writing.
The purpose of our scholarship isn't publicity for us; it's to promote
the idea that writing about technology is a special skill, one that
requires both college level training and on the job experience. It came
about because of what we've seen happen with Daily staffers when they go
professional: one in particular became best writer of the bunch doing
the original Microsoft trial coverage. We want these kids to realize
that technical journalism (and I include what we call technical writing
within that definition) is an important and profitable field.
I don't want this message to start an argument over whether technical
writing belongs within technical journalism, or vice versa, or not at
all. This is about investing in the future of our field. In good times
we hear a lot of complaints about the writing of junior level tech
writers - here is a place to start doing something about it. If you
make the donation to the college or university of your choice, you not
only get the satisfaction of seeing your name on a scholarship, but you
get a tax deduction as well!
