The STC has a habit of pretending that it speaks for all tech-writers, and, to my ears, this statement sounds like more of the same. Yet, the last time I heard attendance figures, the majority of STC members didn't attend the annual conference. And that doesn't even include all the tech-writers who don't belong to the organization - about 40 to 60 percent of those in the profession, depending on the area, from what I can figure.
Not that all these non-attendees would necessarily want to go to a more technically-oriented conference, either, but you can hardly claim wide-spread satisfaction in the conference among the profession on the basis of attendance .

Moreover, those who do attend aren't necessarily interested in the programming. It's a chance for a holiday, and for some socialization. I suspect that the chance to meet people is probably one of the more powerful incentives for attending.
