I have no doubt that STC carefully caters the conference to exactly the people
they want to attend. And one of the reasons technical topics are avoided is
because those topics would frighten off a fair number of people.

One of the peculiarities of the STC is that it includes not only writers, but managers of writers - and often those managers are the one who hold an STC office. As a pro-unionist, I find this mixture undermines the STC's claim to be a professional organization - after all, you don't see teachers and school boards in the same professional organization, nor doctors and hospital administrators.

More to the point, this mixture could be another reason for the non-technical orientation of the group. As a sometime manager myself, I know that managers often have to make time to understand the technical aspects - that is, if they want to do their jobs well. However, they don't always make the effort. And no wonder - quite legitimately, they have to concern themselves with schedules and planning, and other non-technical subjects.

Still, no one should really be surprised that a group composed partly of managers should put on a conference that's light on the technical side. The imbalance in the subject matter may simply reflect th major concerns of the group members.
