Geoff Hart expostulated, in response to Andrew Plato's provocation:

Subject: STC blackmail? (Was: Humor... sort of)

Andrew Plato reports: . . .

<<STC outright discourages writers from obtaining technical
training. STC and it wants to make sure writers remain non-technical,
so they will continue to see value in the parade on one-off issues
they champion.>>

I've been a member for more than 10 years now, and have yet to see
any active attempt to discourage training. Yes, it's very true that
STC makes no effort whatsoever to provide technical training, but
that represents passive neglect of a training area that members
have not clamored to receive.

Funny you should mention that, Geoff. At the Writer in the Workplace
conference Saturday, jointly sponsored by STC Sacramento and American
River College, Thea Teich, the STC second-vice-president was asked
(in a panel discussion at the conference wrap-up) why STC does not
offer training. She opined that there are lots of other organizations
that offer training, and are accredited. STC is not an educational
organization, and supports education in the field but does not offer it.

(My paraphrase, but she can speak up for herself -- I've CCed her.)
