I too have handled large (300+ page 3Meg+) word docs as a single file. The
way to do it is
1. Get RAM. Lots of RAM. So much RAM that the software is rattling around on
the inside and the motherboard bends under the weight of memory chips. You
can't have too much RAM.
2. Switch off Fast Save and any change tracking
3. Have only one TOC (avoid sub TOCs for chapters)
4. Minimise file size by optimising graphics (somebody else posted a URL)
and other elements
5. Do a "Save as" every so often to stabilise the file (I have a button for
this)
6. Pact with dark powers :)
