The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

If you were a national officer of STC and had to decide between making the
members happy or making non-members happy, which would you choose?

rather than non-members. Even Mr. Plato is an ex-presenter at a convention.
It's one thing to easily disregard people who are not now, nor have they
ever been, members. It's another to disregard the comments of people who
were members but decided that STC wasn't for them. It brings up
uncomfortable questions like: Why did they leave? What we're getting on
this listserve is reasons people left as much as reasons they'll never join.
Granted, to acknowledge critics as former members is probably a bit tougher
on the psyche than the easier road of considering critics as mere outsiders.
But it can be ultimately more rewarding.
Sitting on my desk at this moment is my STC renewal notice. I'm still
deciding.
