That depends on the type of person you are. I'm a moderate planner myself; I often diverge from my original plan as I progress, but I find that initial planning saves me time. However, my teaching experience makes me believe not only that what works for me doesn't work for everyone, but that insisting that it does can be counter-productive. The fact that I only occasionally plunge into projects without plans and that I'm not very comfortable doing so doesn't change the fact that others can do so regularly and thrive.


After about my first year or so of teaching, I concluded that the best thing I could do for students was to offer a range of planning options, and encourage them to experiment with what worked for them. On the whole, I think it worked - and got rid of some of my self-righteousness in the process (But not enough, I'm sure my enemies would say).
