The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I disagree with the premise that one has to be on site to write a Help
system. With the ease of PC Anywhere which enables you to dial into
another machine and view screen images, high speed internet access which
allows for video conferencing and phone calls over the web, it is no
longer necessary to have bums in seats on site. Also, having run my own
company for the last 4 years, I have very rarely worked with people from
my area; most of the people that I work with and collaborate on projects
with are in various countries.
