As is usual with polls, none of Keith's options--or the ones suggested by others in response to Keith's post--explain why I usually lurk these days.

When I first joined the list, a few months after Eric founded it, I responded to almost every thread, often several times a day. My opinions on every issue from certification to portfolios to spaces after a period have been enshrined in the archives.

Now, many threads are repeats by new members of issues that have been discussed several times before. I feel that most list members already know my opinions on those issues and would be bored if I repeated them on-list again. So, I often respond to the original poster off-list. I try to post on-list only when I have something new to add to the discussion, something not addressed by the other posters, something that I haven't ranted about in previous discussions.

I'd like to poll the lurkers. My question: Why lurk?

Off the top of my receding hairline, I'd think some possible poll answers
might include:

Don't want to get flamed
Don't want my name/address getting out
Don't want my company to see my post
Don't want a bunch of people writing to me
Don't feel qualified
Scared of a particular List member
What's the point?
Too shy
