There are some industries that have codified - or at least documented -
"best practices" in the design and building of equipment and/or software
so as to avoid mistakes made by others. Some government contracts
require that you observe a "best practices" standard that is mentioned
in the RFP. Some parts of the pharmaceutical industry require that
systems be developed using "best practices," which are a known set of
references.
Most "best practices" are a kind of guideline by example, but many can
include things like machine tolerances, error limits, and limits on
variations. In one pharm segment, for instance, "best practices" refers
(among other things) to specific tolerance ranges for the presence of
specific undesirable chemicals.
