Umm, actually, I haven't gotten the original question yet from the list. I'm at work considerably earlier than usual (having left only about seven hours ago), however, and I can't really imagine what normal people do at this hour at work....

Anyway, DTMF is dual tone multifrequency or sometimes dual tone modulation frequency, which is the technology that allows the telecom system to decode the number pushed on the pushbutton pad of a telephone. Two tones are generated when a button is pushed--one for the row and one for the column. Those tones are decoded and then number dialed. As Peter said, it's all about dialing, rather than what happens once you get there!

In the US at least, I believe that Newton's Telecom Dictionary is rather a standard. I haven't got a copy handy at the moment, but it's a great reference.

------Original Message------
Strictly, DTMF refers to tone dialing (as opposed to pulse dialing) and has nothing to do with voice activated systems. I have a feeling that what they're trying to say is that voice activation is the preferred operation, but dialing (or really button pushing) is possible.

Just about every piece of modern telephone equipment is DTMF capable.
