This would work, but for more veteran writers, it
would still border on the mundane. I prefer to do my
research and really see what the candidate has been
doing over the years and create some rather involved
questions for the interview.

No dounts there. And that's 50% of it right there. If
the candidate doesn't mesh with the team, then it's a
no-brainer - ditch him/her and go with another, even
if the one you're ditching is the better writer
overall... It's like finding a brand new long-lif
lithium battery, but if your device only takes AA,
then it's not of much use.
