How do you prefer to incorporate long, complex, branching flowcharts in a document, when they won't fit on a single page, legibly?

Sometimes, you can redraw the chart at a higher level of abstraction. That is, you can regroup several separate elements into one large category. For example, if you were working with a chart that depicted three separate function calls for printing, instead of showing each of them, you could show a single element on the chart labelled "Printing Function Calls." You can save considerable space this way, even if you identify the three separate function calls in a callout. Often, too, you'll find that the more abstract version is all that users actually need. However, if they do need more detail, and the details occupy more than a single page, then the abstract version will still help users to grasp the entire system being charted.
