Folks,

I am a sole writer in a tiny dot com company.

I have a software installation manual that requires multiple versions. This
app server, that database, the other web server, a different operating
system - there are eight basic configurations, with small variations in
each. If mapped as a decision tree, you could see how many choices there
are.

Currently, Help is HTML Help with a book metaphor. I have three versions of
the install which have tremendous overlap.

Framemaker or an XML editor would be useful - to be able to create those
eight versions on the fly from the component parts - but I don't think I
could talk the boss into spending more than a few hundred dollars on new
software. I have RoboHelp.

I was thinking of taking that decision tree and turning it into a web of
short steps. This would be easier to maintain, but only easy to follow
online - impossible to print out. That's considered bad for an installation
manual - but it is a server, so the basic operating system is available - no
reason you can't have it up while you're installing.

How would you go about creating and maintaining this moving monstrosity?
