Don't forget, however, that not everybody uses a mail client that displays HTML, or sets a mail client to do so. The longer that users have been using a computer, and the more technically oriented they are, the more likely that they won't care to receive HTML e-mail. Some of them may even be annoyed by it.
I would never, for example, send an HTML news letter to a group of Linux users. Even though the majority of the audience probably uses Netscape or Mozilla, a large minority would resent it - and probably let me hear about their resentment in great detail.
