Ah, the old specialist versus generalist debate. We've
been down that road before, but it's always an
interesting trip.
Personally, I'd love to build a career as a writer
who's acquired a degree of subject matter expertise.
That's when tech writers make their most significant
contributions and truly earn their pay (and could
probably demand even a higher salary than a writer
with no industry experience). Of course I worry that
doing so would limit my ability to seek a position
during an economic cycle like the one we're in.
