"Now a week has gone by with no word. I've been advising him throughout
this campaign, but here I'm torn. Should he call them, to "check in," or
would that be an annoyance?"

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable in calling the place after the interview,
but a follow up letter cannot hurt. I have sent a few to potential employers
and one of them actually said the letter was what made me stand out above
everyone else - "polite persistance" he called it.

In my letter, I thanked them for the interview, said that I enjoyed learning
about their company and would still really like the job (I've heard people
who conduct interviews a lot say that they have not hired people that didn't
seem to want the job enough.....) I also took the opportunity to highlight
the relevant skills I felt I had for the job, as well as any skills that I
didn't feel were covered in the interview. I also attached a copy of CV in
case it had gone astray.

I closed by thanking them again for the interview, saying that if I wasn't
to be considered for the position, I'd appreciate them keeping my CV on
file.

I kept the tone really light and the letter was only three short paragraphs
long. As I said before, this letter was what put me in front of the crowd in
one instance. In the second instance, I did not get the job, but I did get a
reply to my letter thanking me for my efforts, identifying the skills I
lacked for the job and wishing me good luck in the future - better than
sitting around wondering what I did wrong!!!!

Hope that helps,

Jennifer
