I'd vote for a follow-up note (thanks for the opportunity to discuss the position yada yada; I understand your background checks take some time yada yada)--by email--to show continued interest and enthusiasm, rather than a phone call. Back when I actually had a position to fill, it took a few weeks to sift through qualified candidates. A couple of people called, and I explained that they were still being considered along with others. I guess it was mildly annoying, although not enough to eliminate them from consideration. Mostly, they came across as anxious and insecure. I think a well written note can conceal any such anxiety that the voice might reveal--even for someone who has good interviewing skills and a lot of self-confidence.
