I constantly send Word documents via e-mail, usually outside the company.
>From a user perspective it's much more convenient to simply mail them ONE
document (with graphics embedded), rather than send them an entire
directory of files.

So to say "always link" is an oversimplification - it does not really take
into account the various things you may need to do with your documents.

Embedded graphics have a huge effect on file size, no doubt. There are
workarounds (discussed exhaustively in the Archives), and limitations. But
that's show biz.

Anyway, if your documents (and associated graphics) don't need to move
around much, linking may work for you. If not, it would serve you well to
learn the ways of inserting graphics that have the least impact on file
size. Good luck!
