Can somebody please tell me whether one can modify the Normal template? How
does one go about it?

You frequently modify normal.dot without even
knowing it. When you create a new toolbar button
or a new style without telling Word where to put
it, it's generally saved in normal.dot. To see
how frequently normal.dot is modified -- and to
prevent saving any unwanted changes -- go to
Tools > Options > General tab and check "Prompt
to save Normal template". At least that way,
you *know* when you've changed it.

The reason that there is general caution about
changing the paragraph styles in normal.dot is
that there is a lot built on top of them -- many
other styles in many other documents (yours and
others). So altering the normal paragraph style
will alter virtually every paragraph in every
document you ever view (unless the document was
created by someone who was exceptionally Word
savvy and almost as paranoid<g>).

Apart from the caution about altering the normal
paragraph style (and when I apply it, which is
-thankfully- seldom, I always end up creating a
style called norman!), you should feel free to
load the normal template with a plethora of
toolbars, macros, and autotext entries that no
one but you could possibly understand but that
will make your day-to-day ever-so-much easier.
