My take on the whole "Cult of Long Hours" situation is that it is just another manifestation of our victim culture. The people who are bragging about their long hours are really saying, "Look at how much I suffer for my job. Woe is me. Respect me because I am so overworked."

BTW, the only times I've ever had to work a lot of extra hours as a writer were the times when (at my previous job) another group had goofed off constantly and was about to blow their deadline.
