A useful trick is to make PDFMaker show you what it's processing, so you can see where the process "hangs."

You have to work quickly, but watch for the moment when PDFMaker minimizes your Word document. (I believe in the version you mentioned, it becomes just a title bar.) As soon as that happens, double-click on the title bar to restore the window. PDFMaker jumps around the document for a while and eventually hangs. You'll still have to kill the "not responding" process, but at least you'll know the precise location of the problem.

I used this method to fix a needlessly complex table another writer had created. It looked OK but contained a lot of redundant splitting and merging of cells, and it was just too much for PDFMaker to handle. I recreated the table, and PDFMaker was happy.
