If you've read Judith Tarutz's book, Technical Editing, it's the technical
writers that (ideally) have detailed product knowledge of a few products
within a product family; it's the technical editor that has general
knowledge of all the products in the family. But I've never worked in an
organization that had a separate "technical editor" function...like most of
us, I've had to wear both hats.
