Well, yes and no. At our local STC meetings, we poll
all of the attendees -- first for who is job seeking,
next for who is job filling. While it's true that you
may seldom find a lone writer position working for an
employer who knows little about tech writing, you will
often find savvy doc managers looking at STC meetings
first when they want to fill a position.

Then, too, once you've made your contacts, it can be like
50 writers are looking for a job for you. Many times, an
STCer who sees a job ad that doesn't quite fit them will
pass it along to a friend who's looking. You could be that
friend.

YMMV, of course, but you never know unless you try.
