I am looking for a way to track and manage changes to our documents, many
of which are updated very frequently. I am hoping that writers from the
larger companies may be able to help me.

Our documents are prepared in FrameMaker and supplied as PDFs. Our
customers would also find HTML documents acceptable. We use TimeSavers and
FrameScript. We also have IXGen and MIF2GO.

Question to TWs at large companies
How do you track changes to your documents?

Current method used
DocNotes are embedded into the source FrameMaker files that later convert
to Acrobat Notes when compiled.

Elements of the current method that we want to retain
Data entry takes place at the time the change is made and is not time
consuming (3 keystroke code to open the data entry window, Enter key to
close and automatically format).
Information is retained in the document with links directly to the
change.
Document notes are not printable by default

Elements that I have been asked to add
Summary of changes that can be accessed by the reader (via Acrobat
Reader). The summary should be sorted by date or topic, and contain a
reference or link to the location of the change. This is very important
to us.
Printable summary, but not by default (minor request).

Elements that I have been asked to remove or avoid
Icons or visible footnote markings.
