Mind you, I am looking at this problem from the POV of
a twenty-year corporate captive. I have no idea whether
I could or would do this as a contractor.

That said, I would walk into the room where the prototype
machines are tinkered with and query the room at large with,
"Okay, so which one can I break?"

Someone is sure to ask, "What do you mean, *break*?????" To
which you can reply, "Well, I have to get this manual written
and nobody will show me how the machine works so I'll have to
figure it out for myself but I'll probably break one in the
process, so which one can I break?"

If you get your guided tour, great! If you get pointed toward
a machine, also great! If you get an argument, your problem is
out in the open and management will have to resolve it one way
or the other, which should, unless you have a real a**h*** for
a manager, also be great.

IMO, YMMV, HTH,... ;-)

I am working to create a user's manual for a new piece of machinery that
has no documentation and no one who wants to be responsible for explaining
the machine to me. However, I just handed in a rough draft last week and
heard back today that I have a month to revise it. Fine, but I have
gotten no feedback! I guess I'm just not sure where to begin, when told
"this is awful, do it again" but am not sure what's awful and where.
