TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Keep your eye on businesses that you might not think of--billing and
accounts payable software is hard to get, and many smaller companies need a
customized product. I know of a fern growing co-op in Florida that bought
custom software; and my first tech writing job was for a small software
company that writes customized software for LTL trucking businesses,
shipping and auto parts manufacturers.
Other ideas: I noticed this site (http://www.cpacareernet.com/) and they had
at least one IT job. I don't recommend working for CPAmerica (I worked there
as an intern), but this site might provide you with ideas. Also, I don't
know where they have an office, but Sema4 (http://www.sema4.com/) is a
software design company with an accounting program for architects and
engineers. (I liked the product very much, even with a few bugs.)
