I love being a tech writer and I don't see myself doing anything else for at
least a few years yet. Having no interest in corporate politics, I'd have to
say that I'll never be at the top of any corporate ladder (unless it's my
own).
Referring to Andrew's original post, I'm going to step out on a limb here
<since there isn't any ladder> and say that the only way I've made "big
bucks" as a tech writer was by becoming a consultant. But, you have to have
a certain personality and risk tolerance for consulting. I agree with Andrew
when he says that it depends on your priorities, especially if your
priorities include family responsibilities.
I like change and I don't have a family that depends on my income (just a
bunny, and she's not complaining --- yet), so consulting works for me. It's
been a roller coaster ride of great money, followed by no money, followed by
"Hooray! I can pay my rent AND get groceries this month." YMMV
Hmmm......now that I read that over I'm thinking that if I average it out,
I've probably just maintained status quo. Oh well, <g>, it's been an
interesting ride.
