Check the Techwr-L archives for "seq fields"--several of us have described how to use them to create numbered lists, and variations on that method whould work for any kind of numbering scheme.

The best way to find out what "variables" are available is to check the lists in the Insert Field dialog box. (I much prefer this to the individual commands like Insert Date and Time.)
