Diane,

I have only one site experience of this, where Demand Flow Technology was introduced on a manufacturing and assembly line. The production line had Kanbans, with each set of tasks taking about 3.5 minutes. The set of tasks was documented using A4/letter size pages with colour coded diagrams illustrating the complete set of tasks to be done at that Kanban. I didn't actually do the work, but I think the tasks were also described in words. The colour codes were, I think, to indicate whether an operation involved, say, push fit, a screwdriver or spanner operation.

These sets of documents were mounted on stands, or on the side of a tool chest or component racking as close as reasonably possible to the point where the work was to be done. The operating procedures are usually learned quite quickly as they are repeated many times each day.

Regards,
Ant

What's the best format to use when documenting operating procedures inside a
plant? Would workers read a manual? Would you recommend setting up a kiosk
where workers could access the most recent operating procedures via an
Intranet? Should the operating procedures be printed out and mounted on the
wall?
