No one could possibly argue with a tautology
like that.

Anyone who didn't read what I wrote might think
your statement perfectly reasonable. But the topic
addressed by the article is the fundamental
technology of type rasterization, and the fact that
there is no possibility of exploiting the traditional
and historical subtleties of typefaces when putting
text on the screen. This is because it is impossible
to render the most basic distinguishing characteristics
of typefaces (i.e., curves and stroke weight contrasts)
with anything approaching accuracy, at text sizes.

Among the obvious implications of these limitations
are that--exactly as you say--"it is indeed foolish to
spend too much time on font choices."

How this got twisted into a position advocating the exact
opposite is something I can only attribute either to
inattention or willfulness.
