I'd agree with you here, unless very few customers are expected to print their manuals. Some user research might be helpful.

Another bone of contention is that he wants the page layout should be landscape. Does it not affect the screen shots layout in manuals?

Yes.

But neither is the real point. The question is, What are the advantages and disadvantages of landscape-oriented manual layouts? There are at least two advantages to landscape formats: They are better suited to onscreen viewing (most computer screens being wider than they are tall). And they can mire easily be placed between keyboard and monitor on most desks - a distinct advantage if you are using the manual to assist in something you are currently doingwith some software. A major disadvantage of many ladnscape-formatted layouts is that they are frequently more difficult to print out.

So again, much seems to depend on how the customers will be using the documentation.
