However, if you're
told that every Friday, the company pays for a communal lunch, you know
that it at least tries to think about employee morale.

Why must the company buy you something in order to "improve morale?"

Somebody recently suggested that discussions on this list could be improved if participants refrained from recasting others' arguments into straw men, the easier to be able to knock them down.

Applied to the case at hand: Bruce gave (IMHO quite clearly) an example of what a company might do to try to improve employee morale. Nowhere did he state or even allude that this was what he expected or what he considered necessary for this purpose.

(Oh, and the answer is... A company doesn't have to buy their employees lunch to improve morale. It works in some companies, it doesn't or wouldn't in others; and as Andrew pointed out, it is an expense in all.)
