Sean Hower observed,

It sounds like she was being bullied, and the only thing bullies respond to is standing up for yourself and pushing back.

Many years ago I worked for a boss who would yell at people (particularly new staff members) in public, berate them, the whole bullying routine. I found out later it was a kind of initiation rite, and the way to be accepted was to stand toe-to-toe with him and yell back. Even better if what you were yelling was that he was wrong about whatever the supposed topic was (and could back up your statement with references). Now I've never been a doormat, so I took to this yelling with gusto (and appropriate authoritative references). He stomped off, but afterwards treated me as a (junior) colleague, quite reasonably. Other people later told me I'd done exactly the right thing.

I'm not recommending rudeness or yelling for all situations, but sometimes it's *exactly* the right thing to do.

Regards, Jean
