Birgit Grossmann wonders: <<I am desparately looking for the URL on which an
English editor has sampled common English editorial problems and the votings
of other editors (which vary widely, depending on the question). It's kind
of "what editors would never admit towards writers" stuff.>>

On the Web, try the archives of the copyediting-l discussion group (10 years
old and counting): http://listserv.indiana.edu/archives/copyediting-l.html

I think you'll have to join first (the subscription information is available
at this same URL). The archives can be slow and annoying to use, but on a
good day, they're marvelous. And we're not in the least unwilling to admit
these things to authors, since many subscribers are also present on
techwr-l.

What you're looking for can also be found in the American Heritage
Dictionary, which is pretty darn good.

Vah! Denuone Latine loquebar? Me ineptum. Interdum modo elabitur. (Oh! Was I
speaking Latin again? Silly me. Sometimes it just sort of slips
out.)--Anonymous
