Re the non-split infinitive, I think the key point was that the quote came out of a literary journal. Lit journals are not known for their commitment to readability over grammar. (not a dig, just a comment)

Re the Mark's quote: I could definitely see using something like this when job searching in certain areas, such as a journal editor, a columnist, or other job where exuberance, elegance, and intelligence in writing is valued, *and* where a lit journal's opinion would be respected.
