One of my lecturers at university was involved in building 'Baby' in Manchester. We were taught Basic before moving onto Algol etc but he had one little exercise which brought us all back down to earth.

Basically we had a little programming exercise to do where the coding was all done but setting switches on a black box. He said that all ANY computer did was to compare two patterns and give an answer 1 or 0 - everything else was simply a matter of interpretation and how fast it did it :-)
