It is oft repeated on the list to tell everyone when you're looking for work. I
have anecdotal evidence that further supports this.
I was talking with a computer shop owner about making some upgrades to my
machine (I'm heading in to the company's headquarters for Developer Meetings,
so it seems like a good time to upgrade my desktop machine). We were talking
about whether to use DDR RAM or RDRAM, and we got into talking about what
programs I'll have running all at the same time. I pointed out that I usually
only have FrameMaker, VISIO, and maybe Paint Shop Pro running, because I'm a
technical writer.
"A technical writer?" he asked, excitedly. "Do you have Secret clearance?"
I admitted that I didn't. He said that his wife is a recruiter for companies
that do work for the military, and she is having a really hard time trying to
find technical writers. She has one position, he said, that started at $65K,
which is on the high side for the Charleston, SC, area, from what I've been
able to determine. (I get paid in California dollars.)
It just goes to show you: tell *everyone* when you're looking for work!
