Story 1:
Years ago when I was finishing college in night school, I worked
for a Fortune 100 company through a temp agency... but somehow I
got on the mailing list for the benefits department (of the big
company), and to this day I get occasional mailings describing
arcane changes in my (non-existent) pension plan. I'm just
hoping they send me a distribution form when I'm 65...
Story 2:
Early last year, contract work dried up for me, so I interviewed
for an FT job. They seemed very concerned about my contracting
past. The conversation went something like this:
THEM: So I see you were a contractor... If you take this job,
what would happen if six months from now the economy improves
and contract rates go up?
ME: Well, then business would improve for everybody. That sounds
like a good problem to have.
THEM: But wouldn't you be tempted to quit for higher pay?
ME: Ifrates go up in the industry, I'm sure you would adjust
your retention policies and do what it takes to keep your good
employees on board. Wouldn't you?
