John Fleming, responding to my note that "printing at home (less than 500
copies) is probably cheaper if you've got the patience to wait for the
output", wondered <<Whatever happened to spooling the job to the printer and
going out for lunch?>>
<g> Point. What I was getting at was that color print jobs can tie up your
computer for hours, which most of us can't afford, and even when they don't
prevent you from using your computer, they can slow it down enormously,
depending on how efficient the printer driver is and how modern the
computer. Moreover, most home inkjets have only about 200 pages in the paper
reservoirs and less than that in the output trays, so you've got to come
back every hour or less to empty the output and refill the paper hopper.
Jams are also a possibility... Imagine coming back after leaving the printer
on all night to find that instead of the twenty 10-page copies you need for
the morning's meeting, you've got three copies and a mangled sheet of paper.
Oops! On the plus side, babysitting the printer for a couple hours would let
you catch up on your reading--or if you're like me, at least end up 3 hours
less far behind. <g>

"Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the
earth's surface relative to other matter; second, telling other people to do
so. The first is unpleasant and ill-paid; the second is pleasant and highly
paid."--Bertrand Russell
