The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
They can't check your credit unless you give them your SSN (in
the US). If you have the nerve, leave the SSN blank. If they ask
why, ask them why they want it.
Unless there is an explicit pre-employment need for your SSN,
they don't need it until later. If 100 people apply for the job
and they hire 1 (or none), there's no reason for them to be in
permanent possession of 100 SSNs.
Or get yourself incorporated. As a corp-to-corp contractor, I
never give out my personal SSN. Unless it's for an explicit
background check, and they have provided all the agreements and
disclosures. As a contractor, I'm mainly worried about them
cross-posting something from my company EIN to my personal SSN,
or vice versa. I can't imagine how long that mess would take to
clean up.
I'm pretty defensive about my SSN. My original Social Security
card stated on the back "Not to be used for identification."
Another broken promise.
