Re: Outlook for the future
I am new to the Technical Writing field and have a question to pose. WhatI suspect that the bottom end of the field is going to be squeezed out in the next few years. As another list member said to me a couple of months ago, the days of writers whose sole contribution is to cut and paste "Press OK to continue" are numbered.
do you see as the outlook for the Technical Writing field in general. I
have 5 years of experience in Systems Administration and really got burned
out on it. My interest lies in Technical Writing and am taking classes,
learning RoboHelp and other graphic programs, joined STC, and doing
everything I can to absorb information. I am hoping that I am making a good
career transition. I see ads on Monster for salaries in the 20Ks and get a
little nervous.
However, any technical writers with technical expertise are always going to be in demand. People who have both knowledge and the ability to communicate it are rare, and, bar some miraculous transformation in humanity, always will be.
In other words, don't turn your back on your sysadmin experience just yet. Make sure that it's prominently listed on your technical writing resume, and you should do fine.
