Yes, Maggie's right. There's nothing illicit going on here, just that the files they gave us had the protection on, which meant that we couldn't search for text. They're long, and we want to make sure we don't miss anything relevant.
Under the DMCA, whether or not anything illegal is happening is besides the point. At least in some cases, the law has been interpreted in such a way that simply having technology that allows you to bypass copyright protection is enough.
Probably, of course, nobody is likely to go after you. However, I think that the post that mentioned the problem was trying to make a point about the absurdities of the law - and about the inadvisability of talking about such things - however innocently - in public.
By the way, one of those archived posts compared Word's security to that of a convertible with the top down. I was genuinely surprised that it was this easy to do.
You might not be the only one. But, now, thanks to you, anybody on the list who didn't already know should understand that you shouldn't rely on MS Word's - or any other word processor's - built-in security. It's a point worth making.
